Because I prefer watching fights between foes of corresponding ability and size, the idea of allowing big fellas to polish their knockout punches on little fellas never has appealed to me. But the Eagles aren’t so little: They’re the defending FCS national champions and the preseason choice of pollsters to repeat.
As fights go, the Huskies’ 2011 opener is something like an up-and-coming heavyweight versus a top-ranked light-heavyweight. I can live with that. More important, so can Eagles coach Beau Baldwin, a Tacoma native who grew up following the powerhouse teams put together by Don James.
“I’m as excited as I’ve ever been for a nonconference game,” Baldwin told reporters the other day.
Baldwin’s anticipation is shared by the Eastern players, 41 of whom are from the Puget Sound region. It’s not a match made in heaven, but neither is it a sign the Huskies’ once-noble policy of avoiding cupcakes has gone to hell.
Eastern gets a high-profile platform in a part of the state it recruits but has never visited for a game. Washington gets an opener that finally offers an excellent opportunity for a 1-0 start. Nobody loses – unless, well, if the Huskies lose.
And while another college football tradition bites the dust with Washington’s landmark decision to step down in class, it’s not as though UW’s self-imposed vow of abstinence was common knowledge among mainstream fans.
Now that the Huskies have bowed down to status quo, the list of bowl-eligible schools that have yet to schedule an FCS opponent is down to three. Can you name them?
Hint: One of the bowl-eligible schools is not eligible for postseason play this season.
