Apple is opening store in Burlington

Burlington is getting an Apple Store.

There is no announced date for the Mapleview Centre location, but a sign in the mall indicates the store is under construction next to a soon-to-be-opened Victoria's Secret.

The powerhouse technology company, which eclipsed Exxon Mobil to became the world's largest public company this week, is on a bit of a tear when it comes to store openings.

It will open a new location in Conestoga Mall in Waterloo this weekend.

With the Burlington store and another slated for Vancouver, there will be 23 stores in Canada, with six of those in the Greater Toronto Area.

The current closest location is in Mississauga's Square One.

A spokesperson at Markham-based Apple Canada said the company doesn't comment on potential store openings until official announcements are made.

The Waterloo store was officially revealed Tuesday and will open Saturday.

When The Spectator contacted Eva Bosnjak, who handles media relations for Mapleview, she responded: “I have no information.”

But the Apple Canada website has had job postings for a Burlington location and even the mall's Wikipedia site lists Apple as one of its upcoming retailers.

After a $64-million renovation completed in the spring of 2010, Mapleview has been attracting high-fashion and destination-type retailers, including Coach, Forever 21 and Sephora.

Keith Hoey, president of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce, said he's thrilled to see Apple come to the city.

Owner of an iPod Touch and an iPad, Hoey travels to the Square One location and finds it packed every time.

“I expect Apple does a lot of research before it drops a store somewhere, so I guess they like what they see in Burlington. It's a positive statement about the economy in Burlington.”

Brent Barr, an instructor at the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management at Ryerson University, says Apple has built its success and its retail experience on being “completely focused on the consumer. There is an incredibly strong consumer loyalty that's based on exceptional product development,” he said.
