A tale of two bridges: Mackinac Bridge Labor Day walk has nothing on ...

FRANKENMUTH — The Mackinac Bridge has nothing on the covered bridge in Frankenmuth. Or the Tridge in Midland.

Both places will have Labor Day walks over waterways to mark the end of the summer.

The Bavarian Inn will stage a walk across the 239-foot wooden covered bridge, also known as the Holzbrücke, over the Cass River at noon Monday.

"It's just kind of a spoofy little thing," said Bill Zehnder, Bavarian Inn president.

Walkers will gather on the east side of the bridge for the start. Accordionist Linda Lee will lead the pace to the other end and to the nearby Fischer Platz, said Vickie Hart, Bavarian Inn marketing manager.

“It doesn’t take long to get the liquid refreshments,” she said.

And walkers have been known to sing along the short jaunt, Zehnder said.

In Midland, a crowd will gather at the location of the Farmer’s Market next to the Tridge for the walk across two of the three sides, said Jan McGuire, president of the Midland Area Community Foundation. The three-legged bridge, marking its 30th year this year, crosses the confluence of the Chippewa and Tittabawassee rivers.

“I call this the baby bridge walk,” McGuire said.

Mayor Maureen Donker will lead the pack. Walkers will stop their jaunt at the Chippewassee Park where they will receive a certificate for completing the trek.

The foundation and the nature center sponsor the event.

Walk of Hope this weekend

BARRIE - The annual Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope is more than just a personal challenge for Laura Zawadiuk. It's also a reminder of the mileage she's putting between herself and the day she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2002.

Elementary school kids will see the work of a local illustrator when they enter school next week.

Barrie artist Keith Milne illustrated The Walk, a Grade 1 book published by Scholastic Canada. The story follows a boy and his father, together with their dog, on a walk to see their grandfather who is in a nursing/retirement home. It's a comic narrative, which is similar in nature to a graphic novel.

"I loved doing children's stuff," said Milne. "As far back as I can remember, I've wanted to get into children's books and illustration."

Milne does most of his art in the evening and weekends — he also has a full-time job. His subject matters ranges from comic books to sports figures, from cartoon-like to realism. His work has been published in national newspapers, magazines and books, as well as in an animated television series called Freaky Stories.

Milne's first children's book, called My Sister is an Angelina, was published in 2003. More illustrations for children followed in Canadian Children's Annual, no longer in existence, and four educational books, published through the Solski Group.

Art has been a part of his life since he was a child. His first memory, at age three, was of capturing images on paper of whatever was in front of him — dogs, cats, kids. He took art in high school with a goal of becoming a cartoonist.

College followed, media arts at Sheridan, which included cartooning and illustration, as well as a mix of animation and graphic design programs at various colleges in Ontario and B.C.

While Milne has no children of his own, he does have extended family with children.

His nephew served as the inspiration for the blonde-haired boy in The Walk.

Milne's freelance work has also extended to illustrating a ghost, for a history of the Empress Hotel, for a B.C. magazine. The ghost was the original builder who apparently feel off a missing staircase while working and died. By contrast, he also did a realistic rendering of Hotel Victoria for the same magazine.
