Bucks courthouse evacuated after quake strikes
David Zellis has worked in the Bucks County Courthouse for 26 years. In that time, the first assistant district attorney has never felt the fear he did during Tuesday’s earthquake.
“I never experienced anything as horrifying,” Zellis said. “I felt the whole building was going to collapse at any moment.”
Zellis said he was on the phone in his fourth-floor office when the quake struck at about 1:51 p.m.
“You could feel the building shake,” he said. “It was kind of like walking in the old parking garage. Only you felt it significantly stronger than that bouncy feeling.”
About 700 people evacuated the seven-story courthouse in Doylestown due to the 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia. Multistory buildings in cities along the East Coast, along with monuments on the National Mall in Washington and all federal offices in D.C. were also evacuated.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep and centered around the town of Mineral, Va., in Louisa County, about 40 miles northwest of Richmond. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C.
Doug Praul, court administrator for Bucks County, was the first supervisor to evacuate his employees because, he said, “the building rocked back and forth.”
Praul said the 50-year-old courthouse “never had to undergo the stress” it did Tuesday, and he was “concerned there could be an aftershock,” a rupturing of gas or water lines or a loosening of bricks or windows.
“We decided to get our people out rather than have a committee meeting about it,” he said.
Chris Daley, the county’s director of security, said once he learned the courts were evacuating, he called for a total evacuation of the building.
He called it the only “healthy” option. He didn’t want people to think “Why are there 400 people out on the street and I’m sitting here in my office?” he said.
