Withers: Coulter teams with GOProud

GOProud has crowned Ann Coulter a gay icon. The conservative gay organization announced yesterday the writer, and provocateur, joined its advisory council as honorary chair.

The author, whose latest book is called Demonic , is equally thrilled.

“I am honored to serve in this capacity on GOProud’s advisory council, and look forward to being the Queen of Fabulous,” said Coulter.

This doesn’t surprise much. GOProud loves scorched earth Republicans (see Andrew Breitbart ). Also the organization wants to be seen as a loyal member of team Republican, and Coulter approval burnishes the group’s already conservative credibility. Will be interesting to see what excuses CPAC now trots out on why GOProud can’t come to its 2012 conference.

Coulter is against same sex marriage. In this C-SPAN clip (thanks to Towleroad for the link), she argues only angry gays want marriage equality. She says she convinced the group that it really didn’t believe in marriage. Asked  Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProud’s executive director, about this. He reminded that GOProud only deals with federal issues, and marriage should be left to the states (a position that mirrors the present occupant of the White House). When asked if GOProud and Coulter agree on the marriage debate, he responded with this:

“GOProud’s position is that it is a state issue. You’ll have to talk to Ann about her position. We aren’t the pod people, and we don’t all always agree on everything.

UPDATE: The hearing is over.  Admiral Mullin made a strong statement of support for ending DADT and made clear he was taking leadership.  Senator Levin, who chairs the committee, made it clear that Adm. Mullin was under oath and obligated to give his personal opinion, and so this wasn’t an opinion he was ordered to give by the Commander in Chief.  Sen McCaskill asked the important question: how can the DoD make a balanced survey of the feelings of serving military personnel and their families regarding DADT when gay soldiers are under threat by DADT should they come forward and participate.  Relying on a “Rights” arguement doesn’t work in this instance.  It is a policy issue, which a democraticly controlled congress could fix, if they wanted to. It must be fixed via the political arena.  Don’t discount ADM Mullen’s concerns.  The miitary is cautious, and will examine every potential impact.  Mullen’s statement was a very strong statement of support, which is why Sessions’ shot at him over how his subordinates will respond. Congress must hear from all of those that want the policy to change.  

The IMPACT is on the total force They are not concerned with the impact on individual service members who are forced into the closet.  They want to understand what happens when that fig leaf is pulled off.  I know that being told to wait is hard, but change is coming on this.  Congress needs to change law now, prevent further discharges, now, and then let the Services proceed with their studies and implementation plans.  I do not believe the Services are going to push a seperate but equal plan.
