A cardinal accused of covering up sexual abuse, a Greek politician on trial for money laundering and a politician of great power Sicilian currently behind bars for links with the Mafia are all on the list of Malta honors.

The government has decided to strip the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi of Xirka Ġieħ Repubblika ir-assigned in 1975 and the title of honorary member of the National Order of Merit in 2004.

Opposition Leader Joseph Muscat suggested that deposed Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali should suffer the same fate and be stripped of his Order of Merit of honorary member, assigned in 2005.

A look at foreign dignitaries honored in Malta shows that Colonel Gaddafi and Mr Ben Ali are not the only people on the list with references suspicious.

Kim Il-Sung, perhaps the most notorious member of the list of Malta honors, was named honorary member of the ir-Xirka Ġieħ Repubblika in 1985.A year earlier, Xiannian, then President of the Republic of China, were also honored. During the 1989 protests in Tiananmen Square, Mr. Li gave strong support to the military crackdown on demonstrators.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, was appointed a Companion of Honour Order of Merit in 1995. In 2010, the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Cardinal Sodano has accused of blocking a Vatican investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by the late cardinal of Vienna, Hans Hermann Groer Mgr.

Although Cardinal Schönborn - regarded by many as a serious candidate for the papacy - was reprimanded by the Vatican for publicly criticizing a fellow cardinal, his allegations against Cardinal Sodano has never been officially denied.

Cardinal Sodano was also forced to deal with similar accusations by the U.S. National Catholic journalist, who alleged, among other things, that his friendship with Father Maciel Degollado, founder of the Legion of Christ, spread to discourage investigation of sexual abuse by Father Maciel.In 2006, after a long investigation by the chief prosecutor of the Vatican, Monsignor Charles Scicluna Malta, Father Maciel was convicted of sexual abuse and removed from active ministry.
