Shock in Goderich: 'The whole back wall of my apartment is gone'

Goderich, Ontario — On Sunday at 4 p.m. when a tornado ripped through this small town on the shores of Lake Huron, it tore apart the walls on the second floor of a brick house — a bakery built in 1850 on St. Patrick Street — pinning Jim Frayne on his upstairs landing. Mr. Frayne managed to crawl to the bathroom, in the front of his house.

“I had gone upstairs to shut the last windows,” recalled Mr. Frayne, 58, yesterday in his yard, where his fence had crushed his hibiscus bushes. “I kinda jumped to get over the railing to go into the stairwell. I didn’t quite make it. The wall came down on top of me.”

Neighbours leaned a ladder against his front porch roof, but Mr. Frayne couldn’t climb safely down. “The neighbours kinda cleared a path of broken windows and brick through the bathroom wall,” he said. “But it was wet and slippery and greasy.” He tied a rope to the faucet of his clawfoot iron tub and rappelled down the porch roof to the ladder and then the street. On Monday the rope still dangled from the tub as Mr. Frayne’s parents, his daughters, his wife and friends and neighbours formed a bucket brigade to lower hundreds of books from the destroyed home into the yard.

Camaraderie and neighbourly spirit proved infectious Monday in Goderich. Everywhere, teams of hydro and gas workers from across the region joined volunteers in beginning to clean up the town, devastated by a storm that Ontario’s Premier, Dalton McGuinty, on a brief visit to the town, called worse than anything he’s seen in 21 years of public life. The air buzzed with chainsaws as volunteers worked to cut up hundreds of century-old trees ripped up and tossed asunder like birthday cake candles. The Premier pledged $5-million to clean up and repair the town.

“It sounded like a freight train or a jet plane,” recalled Craig Fischer, 38, who was in his apartment above Coffee Culture in the heart of the historic port town of 8,000, about 200 kilometres north of Toronto, when the tornado hit. “I had enough time to grab my dog and run into the hallway. It came right through my living room. My stuff is gone. Everything is gone. The whole back wall of my apartment his gone.
