The tablet computer is coming of age and coming to your enterprise. While the tablet form factor has been around for a while, the new tablets hitting the market are smart mobile devices that are already at work in many business environments, including hospitals, labs, clinics, and physician’s offices.

In fact, some experts are predicting that every doctor in a hospital will soon have tablets. The devices have multiple uses in healthcare, including electronic medical records, lab order visualisation and results, clinical decision support and medical image viewing. On the administrative side, top interest is in billing, coding and claims applications.

To see how the tablets function in the mobile enterprise, take a look at the main types. Essentially, tablets can be categorised as two different types of devices based on their release dates. The older tablets, released prior to 2010, are fully functional PCs that use a slightly modified operating system (such as Windows or Linux) to support touchscreens instead of a traditional mouse and keyboard.

Poised for growth Since mid-2010, a wave of new tablets that have abandoned the full-PC format have joined the market. These devices, commonly called media tablets, are normally finger driven and use multi-touch screens. Gartner’s official definition is that: “media tablets are slate devices that support touch and run a lightweight OS, such as iOS, Android, WebOS or Meego.” Examples of media tablets are the Apple iPad, BlackBerry PlayBook, Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Cisco Cius.

While the first generation of tablets had sluggish adoption rates, media tablets are already on the rise. Device sales started off incredibly high and analysts are predicting a strong future growth worldwide. Apple sold more than one million iPads in its first month, and demand continues to be on the rise, with Apple reporting sales of 4.69 million iPads in the first quarter of 2011.

database - Sybase: how to add a connection definition to ASE isql ...

My knowledge of using sybase on windows is getting rusty...

I want to use the open source isql tool ASE isql . When I tried to establish a connection to my sybase database, a 'Connection' dialog box pop up and ask for database/server/hostname information.

I think I need to put these information into a file which is equivalent to an interface file in unix world. Is it correct?

If so, where can I locate this file and what is the format? Any pointer is appreciated.

The target server is sybase 12.5

That's what I done to get this sorted:

Install the sybase client tool (12.5

I installed them in a directory

The final location is

Put c:\opt\sybase-MDS\bin and

Define a SYBASE env variable and

Prepare a sql.
