Class of '15 student ready to explore new world at UDM

A little over two months ago, I said a tearful goodbye to my teachers, packed up my locker of four years and did much more before walking across the stage erected on the front lawn at Grosse Pointe South High School.

I have many fond memories of high school, which I will always hold, but I am now ready to leave high school behind and make new, wonderful memories at the University of Detroit Mercy.

My (it was U of D then).

After graduation, I went to freshman registration. As part of the registration process, we had to divide into groups to participate in ice-breaking activities, including one that had to do with the diversity of the school.

The leader of the activity asked us to move into the appropriate group that represented the level of diversity of our high schools, I moved into the one with the least amount of diversity.

Grosse Pointe South has some diversity, but it is not as diverse as many other schools.

I am convinced this is time for me to leave the "bubble" of Grosse Pointe and experience all that the world has to offer. Now is the time to explore my city, once called the Motor City, now called the Maggie City!

Though I am thoroughly excited about attending , there is something about this new chapter of my life that I am not so thrilled about: My friends are all leaving. I have been friends with some of these girls since preschool, and separating from them has shaken the security of my youth.

At registration, I met many amazing people who I would love to get to know better.

When my mom attended U of D (way back when Dick Vitale was coach), she felt the same way that I feel. Soon after starting school, she met one of her best friends in an architecture class. I know that friendships like my mom found will be forged here for me.

I found out about during my tour of campus. We are lucky to attend a school where they devote a whole four days to welcoming freshmen. A few of my friends who went away to college are in class right now and didn't get to experience an opportunity like this.

Dental Student Meets the School of ... - University of Detroit Mercy

Where to begin? Last weekend was the AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) Beaux Arts Ball. This is an event held at the Detroit Yacht Club and is hosted by the architecture schools found mostly in southeast Michigan. Students from UDM, Lawrence Tech, and Andrews University were there to partake in the night’s festivities. Although I am not an architecture student myself, many of my friends are currently in their final master’s year at the school. I enjoyed going out of my comfort zone and spending the night with other UDM students who I would not normally see off campus. The night started off with dinner and the rest of the event was filled with awards and dancing. My group of friends lit up the dance floor for the majority of the night, which made for some very good memories. If you have never been to the yacht club on Belle Isle, I recommend you take a look. It is very reminiscent of California and reminds you of the opulence of old Detroit. Last weekend already seems like an eternity ago and this school week has been a little overwhelming. With a biochemistry exam to study for, a poetry essay to write, and a physiology lab write up, I have spent most of my time in the library. Luckily it has barely reached double digits outside, so being locked up in doors has not been as bad as you would think. Out of all the assignments I had this week, I dreaded writing my poetry essay the most. Although I am not a horrible writer, I lack confidence in every word that I write. Studying for a science based exam or understanding a laboratory exercise comes much more natural to me, and writing takes me out of my comfort zone. The funny thing is, writing this blog has actually been a gift in disguise. It has opened me up to expressing what I think  in words and actually allowing people to read what I write. My advice to incoming freshmen is to be comfortable in your writing because you WILL be writing a lot during your college career.
