Ticket sales, sponsorships rise with Lions' potential
A cadre of talented young players who have shown flashes of brilliance -- including winning the final four games of 2010 and an eye-popping manhandling of the vaunted New England Patriots starters two weeks ago -- and a front office and coaching staff that have earned praise from the national media have translated into an improving financial picture for the Lions. "If the team gets off to a fast start, and with the marketability of many of its young stars, I would not be surprised to see some new promotions/sponsorship arise as the season progresses," said Eric Wright, vice president of research and development for Ann Arbor-based Joyce Julius & Associates Inc. , which specializes in measuring the impact of sponsorships across all forms of media. Detroit ranked 29th out of 32 teams in attendance last season. The team drew 450,286 for its eight home games, for an average of 56,285 per game, which is 87.3 percent of Ford Field's capacity. The boost of 6,891 fans per game was nearly a 14 percent increase over 2009, which was the second largest year-over-year growth in the NFL after the Jacksonville Jaguars . Representatives for the four major professional sports teams in Detroit will be gathered under one roof for the 2011 “SportsFest,” at The Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. The Lions, Red Wings, Tigers and Pistons will headline the festivities on Feb. 12 starting at 10 a.m.
Current and former players and coaches will be on hand for autographs and various activities throughout the day. “SportsFest” is presented by Detroit sports talk radio station 97.1 The Ticket (WXYT). The festival is in its second year of existence following last year’s debut event.
Last year, fans were treated to a day of autographs, games, trivia contests and chances to meet the various personalities from the radio station. All four teams had merchandise and displays on hand that offered fans a chance to see things they don’t always have access to.
Fans can also enter contests to win season tickets and memorabilia from the four major teams. There will also be a host of vendors on hand to entertain the crowd. Driving simulators, putt-putt challenges, free-throw shooting booths and more will be available for guests of all ages to try their hand.
The venue’s sports pub will also have numerous TVs broadcasting the sporting events of the day and will offer alcoholic beverages to those with proper identification.
Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders will be signing autographs in the afternoon, however, fans will need to arrive at the building early to enter a lottery drawing for his signature. Because of the success of last year, officials felt this was the fairest way to allow anyone who attends a chance to meet Sanders.
Last year, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson was the main event, but getting his autograph was a first come first serve opportunity. People lined up at 6 a.m. to be first in line last year.
The radio station will be broadcasting its various programs live from the venue. It will also be holding roundtable discussions with athletes and personalities from the station. Fans will be able to ask questions of the guests and the radio hosts.
