Shuler named interim business affairs VP at Georgia college

An Orangeburg native and South Carolina State University graduate has been tapped to become the interim vice president for business affairs at a college in Georgia.

Dr. Wilbur Shuler, who has served in various capacities at colleges and universities in Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama, has accepted the position at South Georgia College in Douglas, Ga.

"In the short time I have been on campus, I have found South Georgia College and Douglas to be warm and friendly places," Shuler said. "Progress abounds at this college. I have already attended one ribbon cutting, and we will have a ground-breaking for another project shortly. I look forward to serving this college to the best of my ability."

Shuler has held the position of chief business officer at South Carolina State University, Ft. Valley State University, the University of North Alabama and Georgia Highlands College.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business at South Carolina State University, an MBA at Atlanta University, a master of education at the University of South Carolina and a doctorate in higher education at the University of Memphis.

Shuler and his wife lived in Orangeburg before taking the SGC position, which he will hold through Dec. 31. He has relocated to Douglas for that time period.

Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC president, and Shuler worked together at Georgia Highlands College, where she was vice president for academic affairs and he was vice president for business affairs.

"Dr. Shuler is a great friend," Carson said. "I very much enjoyed the time we served together at Georgia Highlands College. This is an exciting yet challenging time in the history of South Georgia College. I know Dr. Shuler to be a man of integrity and dedication, and his expertise will prove invaluable as we press forward at this institution.

Gay Milton City Council member faces reelection ... - The GA Voice

Milton City Council member Alan Tart, who is gay and lives in the North Fulton city with his partner and daughter, will face Lance Large on the November ballot for the council's District 6 seat.

The election is set for Nov. 8, 2011. The official qualifying period for candidates began Monday and ended Friday afternoon.

Tart, who is seeking his second term on the council, has been open about his family during his previous campaign and in his biography on the Milton City Council website, but was not known to gay political groups until earlier this summer.

“I wanted people to know that I was a man running for council and happened to be gay, and proud to be gay … I knew from the onset that I did not want to hide who I was. I’m proud of who I am. But I did not want sexuality to be at the forefront of the job,” Tart told the GA Voice in an interview in June.

In an i nterview in August after he announced his intent to seek reelection, Tart said he did not plan to seek the endorsement of gay political groups or "any non-Milton citizen associations, developers, political parties, or political action groups."
