Spiders Fall to Hoyas in Exhibition Play
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - In its lone exhibition contest of the 2011 season, the University of Richmond men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Monday evening at Ukrop Park.
"Obviously we're a little disappointed, but we were able to find out more about our team's capabilities," said head coach Clint Peay . "We know what we need to focus on, and I'm confident that if we do those things we'll be fine."
Georgetown, who advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Championship a year ago, jumped out to an early lead in the 10th minute on the heels of a well-placed corner that was bent to the right side of the net and past sophomore Zac Brown (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) for the game's first goal.
The Hoyas made it 2-0 in the next minute when a ball fed from near midfield was headed to the upper right and over the outstretched hands of a diving Brown.
After the Spiders settled into a rhythm for the remainder of the half, Georgetown would extend the lead to 3-0 early in the second when a Hoya player escaped the Spider backline in the 55th minute and angled a shot from the left corner of the box that slipped just past freshman Thomas Hand (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and into the lower right of the goal.
The Spiders began to hit their offensive stride moving forward in the second. Looking to narrow the lead in the 61st minute, freshman Sean Baker (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) found sophomore Spencer Schiff (Clemson, S.C./D.W. Daniel) with a long ball down the field. Schiff battled for the ball with the Hoya backline at the right corner of the box before the goalkeeper collected the ball to keep the threat at bay.
The squad's best scoring opportunity came soon after when freshman Timmy Albright (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School) beat a Hoya defender just outside of the box and drilled a shot that ricocheted off the left post. Junior Chase Johnston (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson) went back on the attack moments later, driving the ball down the middle of the field before firing a shot from the top of the box that just missed wide right.
