9/11 memories: What we kept

New York: After the roaring after the first ground tremble collapse sent clouds of pulverized material escaping through Lower Manhattan, a man paused in his hasty retreat to take in a world now covered by the gray dust uncertain. For reasons he still can not explain, he bent down, scooped some of that gray in an envelope - and kept moving. Meanwhile, in the south, a businessman was shredding his T-shirt and distribution of strips of cloth as protection against dust congealed air, a bank manager has accepted the gift from abroad and pressed it to his mouth.And north, a television producer shaken he did to the Hudson River, where someone handed him a small red ticket giving him a place on a ferry to New Jersey, where she lived. In the wake of September 11, people all do what people do in the wake of new disaster: We cried, prayed, rages, curled up, meeting, hiding, drinking, interrogated, comforted and sought comfort. We also saved things, little things often, and often for reasons beyond just the full scope of the joint. Now, a decade later, many of us still keep these banal, date and circumstances that have forged close the sacred artifacts.They return instantly to a moment we have no desire to revisit, but are determined not to forget. The airport is a good 30 minute drive from downtown Seattle. The cruise ports are (depending on which cruise line) either right at downtown or just north or downtown.

In general, you’ll find that the hotels near the airport offer a free shuttle to and from the airport, and some of the downtown hotels offer free shuttles to and from the cruise ports. I do not know if any that offer both.

So unless someone else knows of hotels that offer both, you’ll need to decide where you want to stay and which free shuttle you want to take advantage of. Personally, I’d want to be staying in downtown where you can easily walk to the attractions during whatever free time you have before you embark on your cruise.

That said, it’s pretty easy to get into downtown Seattle from the airport – Link Light Rail goes from the airport into downtown Seattle with stops in the bus/light rail tunnel downtown. It’s 2.50 per person and takes about 35 minutes. Most downtown hotels will be a short walk from one of the light rail stops. This would work best if you pack pretty light and can maneuver your luggage yourself.

Your other options would be grey line buses (about $20 per person, stops at several major hotels downtown, but not all), a taxi or hired car service (about $50 total).
