RADIO CRIME: HAM RADIO SCOUT LEADER MURDERED IN INDIANA
An Indiana ham radio operator and scouting leader has been brutally murdered. This, while leading a group of scouts on a nature hike. Amateur Radio Newslines Mark Abramowicz, NT3V, has the details:
Seventy-six-year-old Arthur Anderson, W9WPH, of Kokomo, Indiana, was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That the assessment from Indiana state police investigating the murder of the long-time Scout leader from Troop 506 based at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kokomo.
They say Anderson was leading two scouts, ages 11 and 12 , on Sunday, Aug. 21 on a nature walk on the Nickel Plate Trail near the community of Bunker Hill, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.
As the group stopped briefly near a tree, authorities say 22-year-old Shane Golitko leaped on Anderson and stabbed him in the neck with a 12-inch knife.
Investigators say another leader who was along on the hike shielded the young Scouts from the attacker, who then fled on foot after the assault.
Despite efforts to stop the bleeding, authorities say Anderson died at the scene.
Authorities arrested Golitko inside his nearby home where he lived with his mother.
He's now being held in the Miami County jail.
Investigators also learned a short time before the deadly attack on Anderson, Golitko had kicked and punched his mother in an unprovoked assault. She ran to a neighbor's home for help.

Helicopter Rescue Mission, Washington State
Kudos to all involved. Last year, K9VD (Randy), helped coordinate a rescue of a Dad, his son and his son's friend when they got caught by the dark in the Cascade Mountains while hiking. The dad had an HT and Randy heard him call for help. Randy talked to the sherrif's dept via cell phone and the dad via a 2 meter base station. He was able to direct a helicopter to their location and they safely made it out. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Remember your 10 essentials when you're out hiking! Add an HT to the list! Mike, w7xtz As a fellow KBARA club member, and having listened to the whole thing go down, I gotta say I was very impressed with the KBARA members involved with the operation. John's professionalism and operating skills (and those of the first responders who go to the scene) were top notch. I was glued to the radio for the entire ordeal! Wilderness emergency communications were one of the reasons why I got into ham radio. This is what it's all about. Tod and his friends were pretty fortunate to be within repeater range in that remote area. The KBARA system has great coverage, but wow, that's pretty impressive. Be careful out there everyone! And with hunting season starting in many places a reminder about the 146.52 wilderness protocol. That is important because there are many mountainous areas without repeater or cell phone coverage,. Those of us who live adjacent to such areas can assist by monitoring 52 five minutes before each hour until five minutes after the hour in the event a ham with an HT has emergency traffic. I live at the base of the Blue Mountains in Eastern Oregon and about 40 miles from the Wallowa mountains. From my house in the valley (and even mobile) I can hear simplex VHF traffic from some pretty remote areas in both of thosemountain ranges. I love to read stories such as this; thank you for keeping us appraised. Much applause to all the hams who acted in a smart manner to get this poor fellow the care he needed. Bravo.
