Theater World Hopes History Plays Make Up for Historic Hurricane Losses as ...
The unprecedented weekend shutdown of New York’s Broadway and Off-Broadway theaters by Hurricane Irene August 27-28 cost the theater industry nearly $10 million in lost ticket sales.
The Broadway League’s figures showed that in the previous week, theaters earned over $20 million in ticket sales, but during the hurricane week, they took in just $11 million. Hurricane week had 131,000 ticket buyers versus 218,000 in the previous week. The drop off was about the same in percentages for Off-Broadway shows (one theater in Vermont was destroyed by the hurricane). The theaters have been shut down before, after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and during last winter’s blizzard, but those closures were just for a single day.
The theater needs another record-breaking season like last year to offset the hurricane losses and is once again relying on a number of plays about and from history to do so, starting with a very ballyhooed revival of Follies (McCarter Theater, Princeton, N.J.)
The history plays this season fall into a half dozen categories with, surprisingly, few about American politics. There are usually a number of plays about politics, but this year history plays are full of astronomers, singing French revolutionaries [politicians of a sort], noble southern lawyers and nineteenth-century Russian playwrights.
There are several important plays about race. These are led off on October 13 by Mountaintop the story of the much publicized 1930s bank robbers. The show is based on the movie, which was based on newspaper accounts of the daring duo (“We rob banks…”). It opens in December, just in time for a Christmas shootout.
The flood of history plays is not limited to New York.
A quick look at theater schedules around the country shows not only a season rich in history plays, but one filled with different kinds of history plays.

Bay Street movie theater closing - Port Orchard Independent
Far Away Entertainment, a Bainbridge Island-based theater management group, has announced its Historic Orchard Theater, on Bay Street in Port Orchard, will close on Dec. 30.
The small, two-screen art house was renovated and reopened three years ago in the central downtown district.
It had initially served as Port Orchard’s only theater until a multi-plex theater was built years ago a short distance away.
According to Jeff Brein, managing partner for Far Away, the theater has not met the revenue goals that were initially established to enable the facility to stand on its own.
“With a major first-run, multi-screen theater nearby, we felt that a more adult-oriented independent and art film concept was worth trying,” he said. “It’s been difficult to attract this audience segment on a consistent basis, especially in the evening hours.”
As in all of its theaters, Far Away hosted numerous community and non-profit events in Port Orchard for local charities and civic organizations.
“We’ve never felt unwelcome or unwanted by the community and still feel there is a need for a smaller quality film venue in town,” Brien said, “especially as the downtown core develops and grows in the years ahead. Perhaps our concept was just a bit premature for its time.”
While the facility will close at year-end, Brein and his team are still interested in exploring concepts for reopening or selling the theater if financially viable.
“In this day and age,” he said, “the operation of small movie houses is a challenging business but with the right concept they can succeed and even generate a small profit.”
