Honolulu Council Considers Flat Cab Fares From Airport To Waikiki

HONOLULU -- Taxi cab companies on O'ahu may soon be forced to charge flat-rate fares between the Honolulu Airport and Waikiki.

The Honolulu City Council will hear a bill Wednesday, that could eventually require the flat-rate fares.

Council Chairman Ernie Martin said he authored the bill after hearing concerns from the Hawaii Hotel Association.

"They reported there have been cases where for one trip it would be $40 and a similar trip would be $60, basically taking the same route,” Martin said.

But for taxi companies like The Cab -- many questions remain. In its current form, the bill does not require flat fares.

But Martin says that is the intent.

Right now, all cab companies can charge any rate they want as long as it is at or below the registered metered rates.

The Cab’s owner and president, Howard Higa, supports a flat rate but said he is concerned about time charges.

"Sometimes it could take an hour to get from the airport to the hotels and that could make a difference of at least 20, 25. And if it's a flat rate of 40 dollars instead of 60 dollars because he's on the highway for an hour, then I don't think that's fair for the driver as well," Higa said. But council members will consider peak hour rates and fee zones between the airport and Waikiki, Martin said.

"Dropping off visitors at the beginning of Waikiki versus at the end of Waikiki and the differential,” Martin said.

If the bill ultimately passes, the city's director of customer services would determine the fee schedule, Martin said.

The bill goes before the Honolulu City Council at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
