Leisure Destinations Continue to Lower Prices Due to Increased Hotel Competition

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 23, 2011 - Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the August 2011 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire’s already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars.

Many hotels in popular Canadian cities needed some extra help filling rooms this month after Canada Day holiday travel died down. Coupled with an increase in competition between the higher star-rated hotels, prices are being driven down significantly in these markets.

For the first time ever, Kingston, Ontario makes it onto the list, claiming first place with a 12 percent decrease. This small town, which falls equidistant from Toronto and Montreal, has several hotels competing for traveller bookings, and that is driving prices down. Kingston hosts a wide array of music, art and film festivals throughout the year, and is a great starting point for those looking to visit other popular cities in Ontario and Quebec.

Victoria, British Columbia comes in at second place for the second month in a row with a 10 percent decrease and rates averaging nine dollars less than last month’s prices. This is a great leisure destination that continues to drop rates to battle the impact of the unfavorable exchange rate in the hope of attracting more travelers. Maintaining its presence on the list for the fourth month in a row, Calgary, Alberta takes the third spot with a five percent decrease. Like the past several months, Calgary continues to push prices down to attract more visitors due to a soft local economy.

After dropping off the report last month, both Banff and Whistler jump back on to round out the list with four and two percent drops, respectively. Both cities are great outdoor destinations and have continued to lower prices to counter a slower than average off-season.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for include:

Example of a Current Rank Hotel Market Price Drop Hotwire Deal, CAD$/Night 1 Kingston, ON -12% 3-star $135 2 Victoria, BC -10% 3.5-star $95 3 Calgary, AB -5% 4-star $130 4 Banff, AB -4% 3-star $120 5 Whistler, BC -2% 3.5-star $99 is offering wonderful deals for any domestic or international traveller who wants to get away before the busy school season and holiday planning starts again," said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. "As competition among hotels grows and tourist traffic slows during these months, a variety of markets are offering fantastic travel values.
