And The Beat Goes On At Old Settlers

"Coming Home" proved an apt theme for the 2011 Old Settlers grand parade staged Thursday evening, Aug. 18. There were elements of the familiar - basically the same parade route, the six-deep crowds on both sides of the street, high school bands, attractive kids riding in snazzy convertibles - to make veteran parade goers feel at home. At the same time, there were enough firsts - more church floats, new fire trucks, a new crop of star readers, different faces on traditional floats - to sustain the interest of those same veteran parade goers. As always, and as befitting a town whose nation is involved in a protracted war, a color guard led the parade. That guard reflected veterans who have luckily come home and young soldiers, those who may still draw assignments overseas. The six who stepped off first included Roger Myers, Bob Fuehne, Leighton Cline, Dale Walcher, Mike Meyers, and Matt King. King and Fuehne carried the flags. Next came a Jeep with a canvas hatchback with a turret top circle opening. Riders in the Jeep included Litchfield's Will Tackaberry, who handed out miniature flags. Posters adorning the 08 Jeep lauded Land of Lincoln Honor Flights. A National Guard recruiting van appeared next. Sgt. First Class Thomas Reif drove the Dodge, which was in desert camouflage; Private Josh Hancock rode with him. Following the National Guard van was the white Ford Veterans' Assistance Commission van displaying the Department of American Veterans symbol, an American eagle depiction, the county outreach program of the VAC, and red, white, and blue striping. In the van were Dave Strowmatt, director of the local VAC; Dave Nimmons, and Bill Cope. More than any other in the parade, the VAC recognizes the value of coming home. Coming a long way to service walkers in the parade was a U.S. Army recruiting truck based in Indianapolis.
