Knitting class is a loopy lark

Greta Lambert gripped a long knitting needle in her tiny right hand, keeping it parallel to the floor.

Then the 8-year-old looped a long strand of butter-colored yarn over the top, gathered the loose ends with her left hand and set about the business of casting on, the first step in any knitting project--and Greta's first attempt at knitting.

After a frustrating half hour, the Stafford girl leaned closer to her mother, Tess, and whispered, "I don't get this."

"You will, you will," promised instructor Robyn Raines, who was teaching the one-day knitting workshop at Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont. "Casting on's harder than knitting. It feels fumbly at first."

Sure enough, by the end of the day, Greta had several rows of neat stitches and a smile on her face.

Big sister Mimi was already planning to knit a scarf for winter.

"I liked it," the 10-year-old said of her first knitting experience.

"They've been so eager to learn," added mom Tess.

The Lamberts joined 13 other budding artists for the Saturday afternoon crash course two weeks ago. Several had knitted before but wanted to brush up on their skills. Others had never held needles in their life.

Raines, an artist from Southwest Virginia, patiently made her way around the room, demonstrating the proper ways to cast on and bind off and explaining the difference between a knit stitch and a purl.

"There aren't many things in our lives where we use our hands like this anymore, so it may take your hands a while to adjust," said Raines, who travels the state teaching classes on book-making, sculpture and knitting under a program sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

"Usually, in the first 20 minutes, somebody says, 'When does this get relaxing?'" she said, laughing.

Each participant received two needles and a colorful skein of yarn to work with. The goal was to make a small coaster by the end of the six-hour class, but for true beginners, just keeping the yarn from sliding off the needles was a victory.
