The Shawnee planning commission approved a site plan and a special-use permit for two planned construction projects during its March 7 meeting.
The commission approved a site plan for a 2,884-square-foot Burger King restaurant, to be located at 11002 W. 75th St., in the Tomahawk Hills Shopping Center.
The plan features more beige brick on the beige-stucco building’s façade than an earlier plan submitted to the commission.
According to a city staff report, the change was suggested so Burger King would better match nearby businesses.
Commission members also recommended that the City Council approve a special-use permit for Sprint to construct a 150-foot cellular communications tower and related buildings at 23120 W. 54th St., just north of the Crouch’s Corner subdivision.
Attorneys submitted the request on behalf of K-7 Towers. The tower is intended to improve wireless coverage for the northwestern part of the city.
According to a city staff report, the closest residences are more than 500 feet from the proposed tower.
In 1997, the city granted approval to Southwestern Bell to build a cell tower at the same location, but the company withdrew its request and never constructed the tower.
