Southside's Wounded Warriors, new suits prepare veterans for workforce

When 30-year-old Nate Helmuth was stationed in Iraq, the Army sergeant had a particularly dangerous job.

He was part of a team responsible for making sure there were no improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, alongside the road. Every day in the back of his mind, Helmuth knew that he might not make it home.

"Dying was a possibility. It was always there, the thought that this might be the last time," he said.

And it almost was. In September 2007, there was an explosion while he was working outside of Tikrit. Helmuth isn't sure if they missed an IED or if someone detonated one.

Helmuth can't recall many of the details. He was thrown from the front of the vehicle to the back. There were three people in his truck. No one died.

"That was the worst time for myself," he said.

He survived but suffered a traumatic brain injury. His extensive medical issues made it nearly impossible for him to hold down a job, which is why the Southside-based Wounded Warrior Project's Track program has been such a good fit for him.

The 12-month program provides educational needs and training for veterans, while they receive rehabilitative care for injuries sustained while on duty overseas. Upon completion of the program, wounded veterans are fitted for new business suits to re-enter the civilian workforce.

At the Men's Wearhouse in the St. Johns Town Center, Helmuth and nine other veterans who suffered duty-related wounds overseas on or after Sept. 11, 2001, recently received their free suits.

"It helps me get ready for the future, to get ready for the work field and start my foundation," he said.

One of the program sponsors, Haven Hospice, purchased the suits at a discount from Men's Wearhouse. Another sponsor, Dignity U Wear, provided shirts and ties.

"A lot of people in our organization have a special place in their hearts for veterans," said Bill Sharrett, vice president of business development for Haven Hospice.
