Normally, you would not expect an immediate fusion of minds when some young Middle school age sit down and talk with a 72-year leadership of bourbon distillery retirement.

But when Bill Samuels Jr., the former CEO of Mark Maker, began describing his life experiences and struggles in school, the children nodded in immediate recognition. And when Samuels asked questions, they had so many that he ran out of time before responding to all.

This is because Samuels and children have one thing in common: They all struggled with the frustration, discouragement and pain of dyslexia, the learning problem that makes it difficult to decode written words.

Their conversation took place one morning last week at the Learning Center, a program for dyslexic children by the school in Lexington. School officials asked Samuels to meet the children, thinking they were going to relate. And they did.

Samuels describes how he developed his own way to compensate for dyslexia, a disability, it really did not know he had until he was grown. He told the students that they are fortunate to live in a time when dyslexia is recognized and help is available.

"If I knew that I was not stupid ... but I did not know what I'm fighting, "he said. "The first time I heard the word dyslexia, I did not know what it was."

The school launched the Lexington Learning Center last fall as a "school within a school" at its facilities on the way Allen Lane. The program began in large part to the encouragement of Brutus Clay, a leader of real estate and Lexington school board member who struggled with dyslexia.
