PHOTO GALLERY: A day with the Media — Leadership Marco meets the press
— Wednesday was Media Day for the Leadership Marco class of 2011. While it didn’t involve an appearance on the national TV networks’ Sunday talk circuit, it did have them traveling north to watch a taping of “Naples Daily Newsmakers with Jeff Lytle.”The class continued their series of educational tours about what makes Marco tick, with a look at the media — Naples Daily News, News-Press, Marco Eagle, Banner, Collier Citizen, Marco Island Sun Times, Coastal Breeze, Marco Island Cable and Comcast — in Southwest Florida.
The group spent a great deal of the day at the Naples Daily News building on Immokalee Road, seeing what’s involved in putting out both the daily paper and community newspapers.
At the Daily News, online manager Len Egdish conducted a tour of the plant, including everything from the newsroom to the IT department, with its computer servers behind glass in chilled rooms; and the design department where the newspaper pages are created. A highlight was the multi-story pressroom, where Egdish showed off the state-of-the-art presses.
“It used to take seven hours for us to print the Daily News; now we can do it in under one hour,” he told the group, even with increased circulation.
“Here’s the machine everyone loves to hate,” said Edgish, demonstrating the mechanical device that affixes those stick-on ads that appear on the front page.
And you think you pay a lot for printer cartridges? The Leadership class got a close look at a tank containing 5,000 gallons of ink — and that’s just the black. The colored inks, said Egdish, are biodegradable. “You could drink them, although I don’t know why you’d want to.”
After the tour, David Longfield-Smith, alumnae of last year’s Leadership class, moderated a panel discussion with two area media heavyweights: Phil Lewis, editor and vice president of the Daily News, was joined by Terry Eberle, VP/executive editor of the News-Press of Fort Myers, for a conversation about the future of newspapers and the news media.
