Spring bursts into bloom at The North Shore Orchid Society Show

The North Shore Orchid Society will display a wide array of orchids for the ninth year in a row at the annual North Shore Orchid Show, Saturday 10 September from 12pm – 4pm in the foyer of The Concert Hall on The Concourse, Chatswood.

More than 100 orchid varieties will be exhibited, with local orchid growers competing for numerous prizes, including the Grand Champion Orchid prize. Members of the Society will also be on hand to answer questions and provide expert advice about growing orchids at home.

The Society will also hold a market stall, with a spectacular range of orchids available for purchase, at the Chatswood Mall Market on Thursday 8 and Friday 9 September from 11am – 9pm. All proceeds donated to the children’s ward at Royal North Shore Hospital.

A premier Sydney orchid society, The North Shore Orchid Society was formed to encourage a better understanding and appreciation of all orchids. Offering members regular educational assistance with guest speakers, a reference library, orchid shows, competitions and a fellowship, the Society meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Dougherty Community Centre. New members and visitors welcome.

Hawaii Gunman Son Of North Shore Pastor Was On Drugs - Protect ...

Since the rampage yesterday in Honolulu – Hawaii, the police and media have been investigating who the man, Toby Strangel was, and what drove him to the killing of innocent civilians during a few hours of madness yesterday, 3rd June 2011.

Neighbours have said that Toby Stangel grew up as a normal child on Oahu’s north shore, his family was well known in the wider area, and that his dad Mike is an important figure in the local community. Some Neighbours had said that they believed that he had not been in work for a while and possibly has been using drugs.

Toby Stangel is suspected of being the gunman in a fatal shooting spree Friday morning.

A friend of the family Bob Prasser has said he didn’t know if Stangel was using drugs but believed he was receiving treatment for a medical issue. So this could be a possible explanation to events if the drugs he was on for his medical issue had caused him some kind of psychosis.

“What would cause somebody to do such a senseless act of violence, then continue it on? We have no idea,” said Prasser.

Stangel’s father Mike Stangel who has been the pastor at North Shore Fellowship Church in Haleiwa for the past 15 years, has voiced his utter sadness at the events that have happened.

Pastor Mike Stangel and his wife, Karen, are visiting Disneyland with their grandchildren but were told of their son’s arrest. They are expected to make their way back home as planned at the end of their vacation, though are believed to be in contact with Toby, who is still being assessed by the authorities.

“On behalf of the Stangel family, they are praying, they are grieving and their hearts go out to those families who not only lost a loved one, but also the ones (who) are in the hospital,” said Prasser.

Investigations have revealed that this is not Toby Stangel’s first encounter with the law and that In 2004 he was charged with a felony fire arm violation.
