Marie Smith
Anna Marie Spear Smith, 90, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012, at the Renaissance Nursing Home in Harriman after a brief illness.
Born in Clay County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Luke and Marybelle Spear. Marie was a graduate of Carson-Newman College, where she majored in mathematics and French. She married fellow math student DuPont "Dockie" Smith. Upon graduation, they moved to Oak Ridge, where they raised "three fine boys" (as they were lovingly called). Marie received her master's degree from the University of Tennessee, and was a teacher for the Oak Ridge school system, where she taught in the elementary and home-bound programs.
In 1979, she and her husband built a home in Roane County. They lived there, spending time growing gardens, grapes and strawberries. She was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church in Kingston, where she had served as the church librarian. Marie was also a founding member of the First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers and sisters; son, Donald Nathan Smith; and loving husband, DuPont "Dockie" Smith.
Marie is survived by three loving sons, David DuPont (Hilda) Smith of Wilkesboro, N.C., Robert Daniel Smith of Oak Ridge, and grandson (adopted son) Donald DuPont Smith of Charlottesville, Va. She is survived by two granddaughters, Abbie (Hugh) Hanchey and Bethany (Jon) Swaim, all of Ferguson, N.C. She was a loving great-grandmother of Holt and Smith Hanchey and Garris and Annalee Swaim. Marie is also survived by many dear family friends.
The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, in the chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Plemons officiating. Interment will be in the Spring City Cemetery. The family received friends Sunday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was a native of Roane County, Tenn., and the daughter of the late Morgan and Helen Wampler Clark. She was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Amanda Renfro. Graveside service will be 1:00pm Wednesday at Mapleview Cemetery.
