Labor Day rally to honor the working people
Joe Cassell thinks it's about time to put the emphasis of Labor Day back on "labor."
The Salina retiree, who worked 32 years for Graves Truck Line and was a longtime member of the Teamsters Union, said he's far from a public speaker. But he volunteered to speak at an upcoming Labor Day celebration because he thought it important to remind people just how vital the labor force has been to the building of Salina.
"From the first employer in Salina, which I believe was the railroads, to now -- I want to talk about the labor force and the people that made the city what it is today," he said. "It's the people out there working day by day that have made our country strong."
Cassell will be a featured speaker at a Salina Community Labor Day Celebration from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Campbell Plaza, in the 100 block of South Santa Fe Avenue.
The purpose of the celebration is to honor the working people who keep America -- and Salina -- running, said Greg Stephens, a rally organizer.
These include teachers, firefighters, police officers, postal workers, factory workers, transportation workers, construction workers, farmers, medical personnel, service employees, city, county and state employees, and thousands of other members of the workforce, he said.
"Labor is a critical part of the nation's economy," said Stephens, who teaches management courses at Kansas State University at Salina. "This is an opportunity to thank them."
Also at the rally, Salina City Commissioner Aaron Householter will deliver a welcome and Salinan Bob Storer will recite a proclamation. There also will be a performance by Salina folk music duo Mattson and Weaver and complimentary pizza from Coops Pizzeria.
There also will be remarks by Democratic politician Chad Manspeaker, a Topeka city councilman and public affairs director for Laborers' Local Union 1290, whom Stephens called a dynamic force in Kansas labor and government.
"He stands up for a labor force that may be losing benefits," Stephens said. "He's a rising voice for labor who's trying to make a difference in people's lives.
