Tips to get your pool ready for winter

Summer's heat is fading, but that's no reason to ignore your swimming pool.

Reason 1: Nature might favor us with a few more scorching-hot afternoons. Don't miss out on a bonus swim day because you let your pool get slimy.

Reason 2: Closing a dirty pool just creates more work and expense in the spring.

Keep testing your pool's chemistry weekly. Cloudy water could be a symptom of a pH balance that is out of whack or a filter that needs attention.

If you're spending more than 30 minutes each week on pool maintenance, you're doing it wrong, said Mike Bucherich, co-owner of Sensational Pools, a service and repair company in Westlake.

Test the levels of sanitizer, pH and alkalinity, then add an algae-killing agent and a clarifier, he advised.

The website This Old House instructs pool owners to adjust the pH first, and add either muriatic acid or soda ash to correct it. Then add chlorine, but first read the packaging and calculate the amount needed based on water volume. More chlorine is needed when the weather is hot, the heater is being used or the pool is getting heavy use.

Remove leaves, bugs and other debris, and dump the dirt away from the pool so it can't blow back into the water. Clean out the filter and the basket on the circulation pump.

Scrub the walls, floors and steps, even if they look clean. "Algae will grow, and it will grow in places that you missed," Bucherich said. And don't leave inflatable rafts and other toys in the pool. "It's a perfect environment for algae to thrive," he said.

If a pool's chemistry gets out of control, it will cost more to get its levels back where they should be, said Howard Grossman, owner of Pro Pool and Spa, a service, repair and construction pool company in Eastlake.

"You need to be vigilant," he said.

A common mistake is buying low-cost, low-quality pool products, he said. It will cost more in the long run, because you will have to use more chemicals for the same result.

Hydroforce Saltwater Chlorinator • Salt Water Chlorine Generators ...

I recently puchased the Hydroforce Chlorinator (the "S" shaped one). According to the manual, and the included video, the power light should turn yellow when the chlorinator enters power-save mode. The timer is set for 2 hours. The chlorinator then enters power-save mode (supposedly) and the light turns red, not yellow. If anyone else has this same chlorinator, could you please let me know if the light should be red or yellow. Thank you.
