Syracuse man sentenced to serve up to life in prison as career burglar

Syracuse, NY - A Syracuse man who authorities said has made a career out of being a burglar was sentenced today to spend up to the rest of his life in prison for his most recent break-in.

"Theodore Price is a burgaholic," Assistant District Attorney Laura Fiorenza said in asking state Supreme Court Justice John Brunetti to sentence Price to the maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison as a persistent violent felony offender.

Brunetti promptly granted the prosecution request after Price and defense lawyer Jerald Harrell had nothing to say.

Price, 40, of Oakwood Avenue, was convicted Jan.21 to one count of second degree burglary in connection with a break in the house Fellows Avenue, a woman 95 years on September 21.

Authorities link price to crime because of a GPS ankle bracelet he was required to wear while on parole.

He was on parole from a 2001 crime spree that involved 33 residential and commercial burglaries a break.

It's crime wave began in three months about a week after Price had been released from state prison for a previous conviction.

Fiorenza Price sought to be condemned as a criminal persistent in New York, three strikes law. Brunetti granted that request based on Price's criminal record.

Fiorenza noted in court today that Price's record dates back to 1987 and consists primarily of burglaries.

In the most recent break-in for which Price was sentenced today, he broke into the home of the 95-year-old woman while she was sleeping, Fiorenza noted.

"When he was asked why he did this, he said because Public Assistance and temporary jobs didn't pay enough," the prosecutor said. Fiorenza said Price, who has no children to support, had been living with his mother and receiving Public Assistance and food stamps.

"Theodore claims he 'does what he does best,' burglaries, to support himself," the prosecutor said. Fiorenza said Price admitted after the 2001 burglary spree that he often stole the car at the last burglarized residence of the night to give himself a ride home.
