Gleason back in the saddle
The defensive co-ordinator of the Western Mustangs wasn’t planning on being that this season.
Even when Paul Gleason got the call that the Mustangs were in tough because Mickey Donovan — who was going to be the defensive co-ordinator — suddenly had to head home to New Hampshire to deal with a long-term family crisis, Gleason wasn’t sure that he wanted to return.
“I was stress free. I was working out. I was golfing. I was sleeping at night,” he said Thursday at camp.
“Greg (head coach Marshall) and I talked about it last year. I was at the point where I wanted to step away from it. Is there one specific thing? No, it was a combination of things.
“I just didn’t feel I had the same passion I usually had and I just wanted to be true to myself.”
So while there had been some second thoughts about his decision to pack it in, Gleason and his family had already made plans for the year they normally couldn’t make because of his obligation as a coach.
It’s one reason he was torn over whether he wanted to come back or not.
“Three or four days ago, I had a Winnebago booked to go to Notre Dame on Sept. 17,” he said. “I had started taking golf lessons to fix my slice I’ve had for my whole life. I was looking forward to it.”
He may have been looking for a sign, and that came from his two-year-old son Morgan.
“I was walking around the house talking to Greg on the phone about whether I wanted to do it and I look down and there’s my son with a football in his hand going ‘hut, hut, hut.’
“That pretty much made my decision for me. I look at Bert’s son (offensive line coach Chris Bertoia) running around on the field and I wanted to be a part of that with my son.”
There was one other hurdle that had to be cleared.
“I had to ask my wife,” he said with a laugh. “She was looking forward to me not coaching.
