Each year, as Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists and people of other faiths gather to mark Yom Hashoah , or Holocaust Remembrance Day, they are reminded of the vow that has come to symbolize its legacy.

The Holocaust: Never Again

The expression, “Never Again,” has become the catchword that is often associated with the lessons of the Holocaust. First uttered at the gates of Auschwitz by a soldier who had been sent to liberate its Jewish victims, the words, like the concept of this day of memorial, have often been linked to the experiences of Jewish victims of Nazi atrocities.

Yet while most of the victims from the Shoah (Holocaust) were Jewish, the lessons that the world takes from these events, says Historian Debórah Dwork are not limited by ethnicity.

“I do believe that Yom HaShoah is a really significant teaching platform to think about what has happened in the past,” said Dwork in a recent interview.

The Shoah and World War II

Dr. Dwork, who serves as the Rose Professor of Holocaust History and the Director of the Strassler Family Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies , notes that following the end of WWII, people believed that what occurred during the Shoah could never reoccur.

“(In) the shock of the post war period many people around the world believed that kind of mass murder, that kind of genocide could never happen again,” said Dwork, “(that) it was too much for us to bear. And then what we learned, to our chagrin, and also to our horror, is that genocides have in fact unfolded since.”

Events like the Rwanda genocide , which led to the murder of more than 500,000 Tutsis in 1994, gave rise to the Strassler Family Center in 1998, whose mandate includes the study of ethnic genocides. Dwork pointed out however, that researching ethnic conflicts is only part of the larger picture.

“(It) is one thing to recognize genocides ongoing, as we speak; that has been very important, and that is key. The next piece … is to drill down on how is it that those genocides have unfolded, and what might we need for intervention, or even better, political prevention? What kind of humanitarian aid might be useful?
