Her philosophy is about creating impact in an original way. “The pressure to live up to a standard disappears when you set out to be really different. Be bonkers and the occasion will be memorable.”
However, you don’t have to go quite as far as one Lord of the Manor that Polly knows, who dyes his pigeons so that they look like flying confetti.
“There are lots of cheap tricks, if you take a lateral view of the materials around you,” Polly says. “Something as easy as changing the lighting or a food theme – like a 'last night on the Titanic banquet’ with classical music, or suspending everything in jelly, or having an ice-cream bar – is exciting.”
One simple but dramatic lighting effect requires UV black lightbulbs (found online for about £9, see p17). These produce a visible purple-ish glow and non-visible ultraviolet light, making everything white or fluorescent glow. Ask guests to wear white, and use huge white balloons as decoration. “Block out anything you don’t want to be seen, draping it in dark fabric,” Polly advises, “and remember, dust stands out under black light.
