Huckleberries: Sacramento rubs Corps' nose in own levee study

Coeur d’Alene isn’t the only community miffed at the loopy demand by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clear-cut viewtiful trees from flood prevention levees. Sacramento, Calif., is, too. The corps, as you may recall, freaked out after Hurricane Katrina, ordering communities to remove trees and vegetation from levees (like the ponderosas on Coeur d’Alene’s waterfront dike road), claiming the vegetation destabilizes them. Cash-strapped California communities and flood agencies could spend millions of dollars removing trees and shoring up levees to meet the corps’ inflexible demand. In an editorial urging the corps to revise its levee policy, the Sacramento Bee pointed to a study conducted by the agency that shows some levees are strengthened, not weakened, by trees. The Bee concludes that corps muckety-mucks should heed the findings of their own study and “develop a more flexible, case-by-case policy for levee maintenance nationwide.” Bingo.

It matters little that New York-based news mag/blog Gawker ranks Idaho as the 21st worst state in the country – far behind Arizona, Alabama and Utah. But it is noteworthy that Gawker praised Idaho for potatoes and listed the Gem State’s shortcomings as “Wide Stance McGee” (Larry Craig), annoying celebrities in Sun Valley, lack of a good north-south road, & Napoleon Dynamite. But said nothing about supremacists. Have we finally exorcised Richard Butler’s ghost?

I have worked on the Internet as a published music critic. I was born with an unusual talent for music although nothing close to a professional consideration. I played in bands and orchestras but the recording artists I grew up with like Elvis, Dion, Jackie Wilson, Little Richard and later Motown, the Beatles and the Stones were all genetically talented and much loved recording artists and bands that will fill the airwaves forever. Because I am the father of a couple of kids who are much older than Justin Bieber, I have no intention of bad mouthing him or Taylor Swift, or Myley Cyrus or the idols all of whom are part and parcel to the Tween mosaic of today’s music industry. Today I was listening to Jo Stafford, with her perfect pitch and a WW11 era female vocalist of the century, I did get a little melancholy when I listened to Sunday Kind of Love and You Belong To Me. I have never heard a clearer, more beautiful feminine touch to a selection. Listen to Brook Benton on Rainy Night in Georgia. He had a voice like syrup and could go up and down the scales with precision. Meanwhile, I don’t think a jazz great like Diana Krall appreciates losing revenue to kids. So Justin Bieber is like Frank at the Paramount. Corporations desiring a bottom line leap are making a kid into the Frank Sinatra of the 21 Century. No wonder adults are retrograbing their playlists. I love kids too, but I would rather hear Mel Torme in a nightspot.
