The brand new Liverpool: A Fab-ulous weekend in the resurgent city of the Beatles
It takes ten years since I last summer in central Liverpool and, wow, what a difference.
I did not recognize anything. It does not seem like Liverpool or England, more like Chicago or Hamburg, Berlin and Stockholm (all places I do not know, so I feel safe to use as a comparison). The point is, Liverpool is now a new city, you not recognize.
The Waterfront is, of course, the most remarkable creation of new ones.Obviously, he was always there - millions directed to a new life here in America over the centuries - but the last time I looked it was dilapidated, windswept, empty, decaying. Now it is awash with spectacular architecture, flash hotels, exciting new buildings, grand squares and cafes smart.
The newest and most flashy is the Museum of Liverpool, opened in July and the largest newly built national museum in Britain for at least 100 years. Not all floors were open when I was a little bit around, but I was struck by what I saw, quite literally. The minute I got through the front door, radiator, of course, because it was free, a group of curators and staff rushed to me, almost competing to offer help and advice - "this gentleman way Let me help you sir ".
You do not understand that the British Museum.
Update on the Museum of Liverpool is that while it calls itself a national museum on the scale and ambition, it is actually a regional museum, focusing on the history of a particular city, telling the world about the things Liverpool has always been famous for.
"What do you see, sir? attendants asked.I said, uh, football and the Beatles. The two are Liverpool has always been famous for the British mythology. "No problem, sir, 'said a chorus of conservatives. "Get on the second floor.
And they were there, nicely laid out with loads of screens and interactive stuff, films and recordings, and best of all, loads of real life objects. I do hate it when modern museums put all their efforts in visual gimmicks, and works of art display and forget to show real objects.
