TEXAS FAITH: How do you interpret the Genesis creation story?

The great Reformed theologian, Karl Barth was once asked if he really believed a snake could talk. He responded, "I'm not interested in whether or not a snake can talk, I'm interested in what the snake said."
Genesis was never intended to be a science book, nor a history book for that matter. It's not interested in the biology of potential vocal cords in a serpent, nor the historicity of the conversation.
It is a sacred text. As such, it speaks to the deepest questions of life, to the whos and the whys of life, not simply to the whens and the hows.
When we reduce the creation stories in Genesis 1 and 2 to hows and whens, we impose a scientific mode of understanding on texts that were never written to address those questions. Those who think in these categories only understand truth through the lens of historical fact or scientific evidence. Therefore they conclude either that the stories are "false" and become atheists, or they are "true" and must be defended with fundamentalist zeal.
Genesis 1 and 2 reveal truths beyond the categories of true and false. Their power is found in the many ways they reveal who God is, who we are in relationship with God and with one another, and who we are called to be. They speak to the purpose of our existence and the ways we discover meaning and significance in our lives.
History and science have their own worthy purposes, but they are not the same ends as religion. Therefore, we must read these texts with minds that search beyond the surface of literal truth.

Genesis is an account of the beginnings of the world, human life and social order. Its focus is on moral and theological truths, rather than historical events or scientific facts.
Genesis does not offer its account in competition with other stories of beginnings, ancient or modern, though it is sometimes illuminating to compare the biblical narrative with ancient Babylonian creation stories or modern biology. The text is not asking whether we believe this story or that one. The text is asking how we see ourselves in relation to its narrative.
