1950's corner store treats were great
The 3 Musketeers candy bar was advertised on television during the 1950s-era Howdy Doody Show hosted by Buffalo Bob Smith.
Kids like me went to corner grocery stores to purchase the candy bar, one of many treats for children on summer days.
Producer of 3 Musketeers in the United States was Mars, Incorporated. The chocolate-covered nougat bar was a hit for kids all across the nation.
The 3 Musketeers bar was introduced in 1932. Originally, it had three pieces in one package: flavored chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. Rising costs and wartime restrictions (1941 to 1945) on sugar saw the phasing out of the vanilla and strawberry pieces to leave only the more popular chocolate.
This candy treat cost five cents when it was introduced and was marketed as one of the largest chocolate bars available, one that could be shared with friends.
During its 75th anniversary, in 2007, marketers introduced their first candy bar brand extension, 3 Musketeers Mint, as well as a limited-edition called Autumn Minis Mix. Featured were French Vanilla, Mocha Cappuccino and Strawberry.
This was followed by Cherry 3 Musketeers for Valentine’s Day 2008.
On a hot summer day, during the 1950s, Nesbitt’s quenched the thirst for kids across the nation. It was advertised as the “largest selling bottled orange drink in the world.” Nesbitt’s own brand of orange beverage was surpassed in popularity by Fanta in the 1960s.
Another favorite of kids in the 1950s was Nik-L-Nip, a brand of juice that came in a variety of fruit flavors and marketed by Tootsie Roll Industries.
The fruit-flavored juice was found inside small, bottle-shaped wax containers.
Created in the early 20th century, the Nik-L-Nip brand name was a combination of the original cost (nickel) and preferred wax bottle-opening technique (NIP).
