George didn't stand much chance against a bear though, and Nixon proved unable to run the predator down as it fled Muldoon toward Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on the edge of Anchorage with George in its mouth.

Wildlife authorities recommend against both what Nixon and Collins did, but human emotion sometimes trumps reason. Nixon's biggest wish for a long time was that she had caught the bear that eventually ate poor George. And Collins is happy she did catch the bear that wanted to eat Fudge.

Collins freed Fudge from the jaws of the animal with one good smack to its snout.

“It was a stupid thing but I couldn’t help it,” she told the Juneau Empire. “I know you’re not supposed to do that, but I didn’t want my dog to be killed.”

She isn't the first to smack a bear, of course. The late homesteader Stan Price, for whom the Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary at Pack Creek -- in the Admiralty Island National Monument just south of Juneau -- is named, was notorious for his belief that all anyone really needed to deal with bears was a stick with which to crack them on the head.
