411 Fact or Fiction Movies/TV 9.2.11: Week 295

Will Helm: Fact. With the end of the space-shuttle program and the removal of Pluto as an official planet, now the astronomy geek in me has to contend with this travesty called Apollo 18 . . . and that is scary enough. That being said, I have no doubt that Apollo 18 , a horror movie built around the "lost" Apollo 18 mission -- officially, there were only seventeen Apollo missions, will certainly be scary. It's a nifty little concept and idea, I must admit. Unfortunately, from what I have seen, the horror of the film seems to borrow a lot from the Blair Witch Project / Cloverfield / Paranormal Activity -- i.e. "found footage" -- vein of filmmaking, which is getting old, as shaky cameras and jumpy editing shouldn't replace actual quality. In other words, though I readily admit that Apollo 18 may be scary as hell, that doesn't mean that it will be good. Todd Vote: Fiction. The shaky handheld camera thing can work, as has been proven in the past, and stated by Will. However, like any gimmick, over use can ruin the effect that it can have on an audience. My experience with this type of "found footage" films has been hit or miss. I absolutely hated Blair Witch , didn't care much for Quarantine . On the other hand, I loved Paranormal Activity , and Cloverfield . While I am very curious to see , I'm just not getting the same feeling of anxiety I get from watching the trailers from Paranormal Activity . While I think the film will be entertaining, I am not expecting much as far as it offering up legit scares. Most of them will be from loud music cues, and jump cuts. Will Helm: Fact. Though I have no idea how he would work Denzel Washington into a remake of the Sam Peckinpah Western, I have absolutely no problem with Tony Scott wanting to re-do The Wild Bunch . Yes, I know I'm generally remake averse, but I can get behind this, with my usual reservations, of course. Why?
