Cost-conscious insurers steer some patients away from ERs
_______________________Area emergency departments handled 444,165 patient visits last year, and insurers and providers say a good number of them should never have happened.
“We see tons of inappropriate use—‘I have a rash,’ ‘I think I sprained my ankle,’ ‘I think I have the flu’” said Dr. Kirk Panneton , medical director for Albany-based Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan . “These don’t even meet the basic definition of an emergency.”
The issue is not one of overcrowding, it is one of money. When non-emergency patients opt for an ER over other alternatives, they run up much higher costs for themselves, their insurers and their employers.
For example, it costs upward of $700 to treat a case of strep throat in an ER. The same strep throat can be treated for less than $100 at an urgent care center.
This has insurers and providers alike seeking ways to steer people with minor complaints away from ERs and toward primary care alternatives.
