I am a banjo player struggling to learn fiddle. I have a lot of problems with intonation. Has anyone tried the Fingerboard Applique. Its a stick on fingerboard with slightly raised fret impressions unlike real metal frets. Its an American idea as an aid for learning the fingerboard. I would like to know people opinions of it and if anyone leaves it on permanently.

Hi The fiddle fretter is an excellent tool that allows you to "feel" your finger positions without having to look at your left hand all the time while you are learning, it uses very thin wires that as I said are a tactile help in learning finger positions, the fretter is not real frets in that it does not stop the string and will not prevent you from doing slides. you only need to use it a short time, I removed the fretter after 3 weeks, why because it is so good, I didn't need it again, but it's easily removable, if you have a stickey fingerboard after use , it's because it was dirty before you used the fretter, I clean the fingerboard before use and it comes off clean, it can be reused over and over again. Some will say that you can't get proper intonation using straight frets across a fiddle fingerboard, the fretter is so close to proper position you will have no problem with intonation later. most people who are negative to the Fretter never used one.

I used the Fiddle Frets appliqué for about 6 months when I was first starting. It does what it says by giving you a easy VISUAL reference to where notes should be. After 6 months, I bought a new fiddle and my instructor encouraged me NOT to use the fretter on the new fiddle.
