Her family said Ms. Gartland believed in being of service and thus spent her law career in public service as an attorney at the city, county and state levels in both Michigan and Colorado. Most notably, she was one of the first women public defenders in Denver, and she was a leading force in preserving the MacGregor Ranch in Estes Park. She also served as deputy director of the Colorado Division of Labor and was most recently a judge in the Division of Administrative Hearings for the Colorado Division of Personnel and Administration based in Durango, working mostly on workman’s compensation cases.

Ms. Gartland came to the Durango area because she was a founding member of Heartwood Co-Housing, where she lived from approximately 2002 to 2008. She was an active member of the Great Old Broads for Wilderness and volunteered in their administrative offices in addition to participating in field and educational activities. She could be found every Tuesday for an hour each week sitting in silence in the park for peace.

Marquette – The Transition Marquette County Reading Group will meet to discuss the book “Earth: Making a Life on a Tough New Planet” by Bill McKibben, on Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library in Marquette. .

McKibben’s book looks at changes to our planet, some of which have already begun to happen, as a result of climate change and the end of the age of cheap energy and peak oil production. Those attending are encouraged to read all or part of the book prior to attending the meeting.
